Computer support for distributed asynchronous software design teams: experimental results on creativity and quality

چکیده
Previous research has indicated that the creative task of deciding upon the initial specijcations for a sojtware SySfem can benefit from a structured process to guide group interaction in Face-to-Face meetings, and can benejlt from computer support. This 2x2 experiment is the Jrst to look at the joint effects of a distributed asynchronous computer conferencing mode of communication (CC, as compared to Face to Face), and a structured process, on sojtware design outcomes. Subjects were teams of graduate students in computer science and business, who designed an automated post of&e as a course assignment. Though the quality of solution produced by the CC groups was judged to be higher, it was not significantly so. However, the CC groups were considerably more creative. There were no main effects for the structured/unstructured factor, nor an-v signi$cant interactions. One approach is to provide support for design through the use of group support systems [16,33,10]. In this paper, we report on an experiment which investigated the usefulness of computer-conferencing to support design groups working (1) on the early stages of design (2) in a distributed asynchronous environment. Asynchronous refers to the dimension of time -at different times -while distributed refers to the dimension of space -at different maces. Thus, members of distributed asynchronous groups “meet” or communicate with one another at different times, from different places.

The Impact of Personality on Virtual Team Creativity and Quality
A series of experiments investigated creativity and quality of work-product solutions in virtual teams (Ocker,2007, 2005; Ocker & Fjermestad, 1998; Ocker, Hiltz, & Johnson, 1998; Ocker, Hiltz, Turoff, & Fjermestad, 1996). Across experiments, small teams with about five graduate students interacted for approximately two weeks to determine the high-level requirements and design for a computerized...
متن کاملUnderstanding the Role of Synchronous and Asynchronous Communication in Agile Software Development and Its Effect on Quality
Through inward perceptions, we intuitively expect distributed software development to increase the risks associated with achieving quality goals. To compound this problem, agile software development (ASD) maintains that face-to-face (synchronous) communication attributed to co-location of the development team is a key success factor. The following study explored the relationship between synchro...

This experiment is the third in a series of empirical studies designed to explore the effectiveness of various modes of communication for groups working on determining software requirements. This study focuses on the effectiveness of matching communication media to stages of group work. Three modes of communication are compared: (1) face-to-face (2) Web-based asynchronous computer conferencing ...
متن کاملIT for Creativity in Problem Formulation
Creativity is fostered by distributed cognitive activity as individuals interact with artifacts and with each other, often with the aid of artifacts. In this design science research-in-progress, we describe a software artifact known as Theory Garden that was developed to facilitate distributed cognitive activity. We detail an experimental process through which we are assessing the potential for...
متن کاملDALD:-Distributed-Asynchronous-Local-Decontamination Algorithm in Arbitrary Graphs
Network environments always can be invaded by intruder agents. In networks where nodes are performing some computations, intruder agents might contaminate some nodes. Therefore, problem of decontaminating a network infected by intruder agents is one of the major problems in these networks. In this paper, we present a distributed asynchronous local algorithm for decontaminating a network. In mos...
